Documenting the International Avant Garde: Earle Brown and the Time-Mainstream Contemporary Sound Series

Earle Brown, who is best known for his influence as a composer, was also active as a record producer. His work for the Time and Mainstream record companies from 1960 through 1973 included the Contemporary Sound Series of notable recordings of avant-garde music. Distinguished for its adventurous repertoire of various national and aesthetic origins, this series of 18 long-playing discs reflects another dimension of Brown's contribution to 20th-century music.
