Zusammenfassung:Over 100 000 psychiatric beds have been closed since the 1960s, with many people with severe mental illness now enjoying a better quality of life. But research into violence still focuses on the inpatient setting. Considers whether this can be used to inform management in the community, and what is known about the management of violence by patients in the community. Suggests why return to institutionalisation may not be the answer and considers what is needed.
