After liberalization, Malawi's three regions are each dominated by one political party. Discusses the election results, and contends that there is a persistent search for a maximum coalition in the Malawian political process and, instead of portraying democratisation as dominated merely by regional fragmentation, equal attention should be paid to the not always unsuccessful search for consensus politics.
