Zusammenfassung:Evidence from 94 periodic commitment hearings for patients in a state mental hospital shows that public defenders often engage in adversarial questioning of hospital psychiatrists. However, psychiatrists generally manage such resistance and document their diagnostic arguments for continued commitment by referring to observations of patients' behaviour or other events occurring within the privileged organisational domain of the hospital.
