This includes the basic laser and drive operational mechanics, the nature of the actual disc itself, the data organization at the channel code level and at the logical file level, and aspects of error correction and detection methods used. A brief synopsis of disc fabrication is presented. The article concludes with descriptions of advances in the technology currently on the horizon. © 1988 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
