Zusammenfassung:THE fact that no little state can exist for any length of time in contact with a more powerful neighbour, attests more plainly than any exposition of the possible tendencies of a more liberal commercial system, or even of a more refined civilisation, the proneness of human nature to dominion and of nations to war. Of the desirableness, the importance, the duty of peace there cannot be a moment's doubt. Christianity enjoins it, self-interest and national prosperity are alike concerned in it; literature, the arts and sciences can alone flourish under its protection, but such a thing is not.
