Outliers and Advocates: Glimmers of Hope for the New Millennium?

The best understandings of scholars of the news suggest that mainstream news media are unlikely to do much to reverse the assumptions that may be taking us unto an unsustainable future. At least they are unlikely to do so independent of other forces in our society, for the news media, no less than other institutions, are a part of a much larger cultural and environmental system whose interests and capacities, as Lynton Caldwell rightly suggests, tend to support rather than challenge these assumptions.
