Zusammenfassung: | [...]he takes the text he received from theJournal of Indian Philosophy 27: 551574, 1999. c[circlecopyrt]1999 Kluwer Academic Publishers. Haradatta notes the variant compound form ka~ncukopanah, providing a Pan. inian (5.4.106) explanation of that form,3 but he calls the non-compound form the common reading and provides an explanation of the long initial vowel of k a~ ncuk:. t.ity upaves. tprasiddhe pat.he ka~ ncukam eva k a~ ncukam. tadv an k a~ ncuk.3) Ap 1.31.19: div adityah. sattv ani gop ayati naktam. candram astasm ad am av asy ay am. ni s ay am. sv adhya4 atmano guptim icchetpr ayatyabrahmacaryak ale caryaya ca (During the day the sun protects creatures, and during the night, the moon. [...]on the night of the new moon he should try his very best to guard himself by keeping himself pure and chaste and by performing rites appropriate for the occasion). Allthe manuscripts used by Buhler (1932) have both ca, and Haradatta does not make it clear which of the two should be deleted. Since all five sutras preceding this (2.26.1317) and the four following558 PATRICK OLIVELLEit (2.26.1922) have ca as the second word, I would conclude that the offending ca is the last.29) Ap 2.26.6: sarvato yojanam. nagaram. taskarebhyo raks. yam (They must protect a town from thieves up to a yojana on all sides). Haradattas use of the verb adhi pi to refer to variant readings, however, appears to suggest that at least sometimes he is referring to oral transmission. [...]at Ap 1.31.19 he says about the usual reading adhyam anas tu pram ada s ch andaso v a (see A: 3). |
