Changes in territorial patterns of the Spanish population (1900-2001)

ABSTRACT IN SPANISH: En el presente artículo se analizan, a escala municipal, los cambiantes patrones territoriales del crecimiento demográfico y de la distribución de la población española a lo largo del siglo XX, así como la relación que éstos presentan con los diferentes ciclos económicos de nuestra historia reciente. Han sido considerados cinco momentos históricos: 1900, como primer año de estudio e inicio de etapa; 1930, como año censal anterior a la Guerra Civil; 1950, como año correspondiente al inicio de la intensa etapa de despoblación rural, emigración exterior y acelerado proceso de urbanización; 1981, como primer año censal posterior a la etapa desarrollista; 1991 como año de transición entre el post-desarrollismo y el momento actual y, finalmente, el año 2001 como culminación del período de estudio. Para este último año censal se analizan, asimismo, los perfiles demográficos y económicos de los municipios españoles. // ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH: This article analyses, on the municipal scale, the changing territorial patterns of demographic growth and of distribution of the Spanish population over the course of the 20th century, as well as the relationship displayed between these and the different economic cycles of our recent history. We have considered five historic points of time: 1900, as the first year of study and the start of a stage; 1930, as the census year prior to the Civil War; 1950, as the year corresponding to the start of the stage of heavy rural depopulation, foreign emigration and the process of unrestrained growth; 1981, as the first census year subsequent to the unrestrained growth stage; 1991, as the year of transition between post-unrestrained growth and the present time and, lastly, 2001 as the culmination of the period of study, for which the demographic and economic profiles of the Spanish municipalities are also examined.
