Nye highlights the conceptual ability to separate men from masculinity and women from femininity and the willingness to tolerate a plurality of masculinities and femininities that have advanced measurably in the last decades. However, in crises, whether real or invented, societies tend to revert reflexively to what appear to be stable gender norms centered squarely on bodies, despite the growing absurdity of treating biological sex as foundational in any respect.
