Zusammenfassung:This article presents the results of an investigation carried out by means of a detailed questionnaire, covering more than a thousand Hungarian households. It turned out that the private economy had a relatively low, i.e. about 10 percent, share in the houselholds' monetary incomes and expenditures in 1989. A great part of the households had no contact with the private economy, either as buyers, or as sellers. Nevertheless, in a few markets where the households were present, the private economy did play a significant role.
