Zusammenfassung:This examines how China' economic vision before and after it joined the WTO, how this helps redefine its interests and identity in the multilateral trading system, and the implications for China's trading partners. The authors begin with an overview of the world's views on China and on economic globalization, with special attention to attitudes in the US. They then trace the evolution of China's relationship with the multilateral framework as the the country pursues different developmental goals. China's new domestic agenda for equitable and sustainable development will continue to affect its international identity, and that is good for the WTO. Beijing's long-term interests lie in mainstreaming issues of equity and sustainability into economic openness at home and abroad. This "Janus-faced" nature of China's global interests will become ever stronger in the country's future dealings with the WTO. A more constructive way to think of China's potential role in economic globalization is to see it as a bridger among different interests and identities.
