Merengue Típico in Santiago and New York: Transnational Regionalism in a Neo-Traditional Dominican Music

Hutchinson discusses how fist rural-to-urban migration and later transnational migration processes have transformed class structures in the country, especially the city of Santiago in Dominican Republic, and how regionality affects migration processes and migrant identifications. He then demonstrates how changes in merengue tipico music over the past three decades reflect and negotiate these changes in transnational Dominican society, creating a new identity for young Dominicans in both Santiago and New York.
