James R. Allen: His Contributions to National Park Service Coastal Geomorphology

Jim's areas of expertise included causes and predictions of shoreline change, beach/dune dynamics, nearshore and bayside processes, historical changes, coastal habitat impacts at rare species levels, and development of geographical information system methods for coastal monitoring and modeling. The Northeast Region of the NPS was particularly reliant upon Jim's advice and knowledge of coastal geomorphology in Gateway National Recreation Area, Fire Island and Cape Cod National Seashores, and Acadia National Park, but he also extended his geographic scope and influence to other national parks along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts.
