Global surface-temperature responses to major volcanic eruptions

Large eruptions in the Northern Hemisphere have an immediate effect on the average surface temperature there. Southern Hemisphere eruptions affect both Northern and Southern Hemisphere temperatures after a lag of between six months and a year.
