Zusammenfassung:Abstract The article briefly reviews some developments in gear tribology research against the background of three articles from the Institution's archives that have particularly influenced the authors’ own contributions to the subject. The articles considered relate to three different aspects of gearing namely elastohydrodynamic lubrication, tooth contact phenomena, and the lubrication and wear of gears having a three-dimensional geometry.
