This article investigates the effect of different injection timings and injection pressures on the performance and emission characteristics of a single-cylinder direct injection diesel engine when fuelled with Honge oil, its ester, and ester blends with diesel fuel. Experiments were conducted with three injection timings of 19°, 23°, and 27° before top dead centre (BTDC) at various loads and at a constant speed of 1500 r/min. Experiments were repeated with different injection opening pressures of 205, 220, 240, 260, and 280 bars. The performance and emission characteristics of Honge oil and blends of its ester (B10, B20, B40, B80, and B100) were studied. Also, apparent heat release rates, cumulative heat release rates, peak pressure, maximum rate of pressure rise, ignition delay, and combustion duration for these fuel combinations were obtained. With Honge oil and Honge oil methyl ester retarded injection timing of 19° BTDC resulted in overall better performance. For Honge oil, a high injection pressure of 260 bar gave better performance. Among the different blends tested (B20, B40, B80, and B100), the B20 blend showed favourable results. Therefore, only results with the B20 blend are provided in this work. |
