This article outlines the main developments of analytical frameworks of global chains since their origin in the world-systems theory to the most recent formulation in terms of global value chain, through the framework of global commodity chains. It also discusses in a comparative perspective with frames of reference of the transaction cost economics and economic sociology, the widely debated question of the governance of these global chains.
