Dermatopathology

This case describes a 50-year-old woman who was reviewed in the dermatology clinic with a 3-year history of a facial rash. Examination revealed erythematous annular plaques, predominantly located at her hairline. Elastic van Gieson staining showed an absence of elastic fibres in the areas correlating to the foreign-body giant cells on haematoxylin and eosin staining, consistent with possible ingestion of the elastic fibres. Treatment was initiated in the form of potent topical corticosteroids with resolution of the facial rash.
