Enhancing survival after ionizing radiation exposure through mitigation of pyroptosis

•Pyroptosis is implicated in the pathogenesis of ionizing radiation so we investigated cell type involvement in a mouse model.•Pyroptotic markers were expressed highly at day 3 post total body irradiation (TBI) predominantly in immune cells from ileum.•We investigated the effectiveness of MCC950, a...

Zusammenfassung:•Pyroptosis is implicated in the pathogenesis of ionizing radiation so we investigated cell type involvement in a mouse model.•Pyroptotic markers were expressed highly at day 3 post total body irradiation (TBI) predominantly in immune cells from ileum.•We investigated the effectiveness of MCC950, a pyroptosis inhibitor, in our model showing survival benefit at 50 mg/kg.•Treatment with MCC950 showed elevation in full-length mediator IL-1β in ileum and decreased level of cleaved IL-1β in spleen.
