For the long period of thirty years he gave himself, his energies, and his substance, to one of the many tribes of Southern Africa, the Amapondas, under the ruling power of the great chief Faku. It has been said of this faithful missionary that "he wished not to be known but by the Amapondas, to whose interests, both spiritual and temporal, he was ardently attached.
