Simple matlab tool for automated malignant melanoma diagnosis

Dermatoscopy, or epiluminescence microscopy, is a non-invasive technique which permits visualisation of features of pigmented melanocytic neoplasms that are not easily discernable by examination with the naked eye. An image analysis program enabling the numerical description of colour areas in melanocytic lesions, their diameter, as well as their asymmetry and border irregularities is presented. This study is limited in the use of simple image processing algorithms, for the sake of clarity, in order toillustrate the use of MATLAB in the calculation of the ABCD Total Dermatoscopy Score (TDS)for potentially malignant melanomas. A high ABCDscore means that a lesion is more likelyto be a malignant melanoma.
