Zusammenfassung: | Studies were carried out in Baltimore harbour, which is a rapidly flushed industrialized harbour, using zinc as an indicator to discover where trace-element contaminants are being deposited. The resulting data is presented with maps, graphs and tables, and shows that, rather than being flushed into Chesapeake bay, the zinc is mostly entrapped within the harbour by sorption on the fine particles which are imported from the bay. It is suggested that, over the years, dredging has ploughed contaminants deep into the sediments of the harbour bottom. A bibliography of 21 references is appended. |
