Nor had it been much better before darkness fell-for it was now past four o'clock. Link-boys were passing to and fro; vehicles driving slowly and timidly; whilst passengers moved along like people in a dream. In vain the shops set all their gas blazing: it only threw a little glow on the atmosphere, which served to show how thick it was.
