Influence of Mg deficiency in the superconducting critical temperature of MgB2

The effect of Mg deficiency in the superconducting transition temperature of the MgB2 is investigated. Our results show that the MgB2 phase is not stoichiometric. The solubility limit is close to x=0.4 in Mg1-xB2+x and the onset Tc shifts from 39 K for x=0 to 37 K for x=0.4. Furthermore, no evidence...

Zusammenfassung:The effect of Mg deficiency in the superconducting transition temperature of the MgB2 is investigated. Our results show that the MgB2 phase is not stoichiometric. The solubility limit is close to x=0.4 in Mg1-xB2+x and the onset Tc shifts from 39 K for x=0 to 37 K for x=0.4. Furthermore, no evidence of formation of MgB4 and MgB7 phases at 800 deg C was found, which suggests only one equilibrium phase between MgB2 and boron, in the B-rich region. X-ray powder diffraction, DC-magnetization and resistance measurements as a function of the temperature, and chemical analysis supports this interpretation. Author
