After sitting in that same spot for approximately 10 or 15 minutes, the pilot came on the overhead system and told us that there was a problem with one of the fuel tanks and that we would need to return to the gate for the maintenance crew to inspect and repair it. The bottom line is that the pilots averted a potential bad outcome by doing the right thing from the get-go. The significant difference between my flight experience and the surgical patient scenario is the potential number of casualties.
