Zusammenfassung:The polar Kerr rotation and ellipticity and the effect of birefringence in YFeO 3 are studied by means of reflection ellipsometry. The data are employed in obtaining the permittivity tensor element spectra in YFeO 3 . It is shown that in orthoferrites the transitions which involve 3d electrons of Fe 3+ give important contributions to the birefringence observed in transmission.
