Oxidation layer in sliding friction surface of high-purity Ti3SiC2

Zusammenfassung: | It is known that polycrystalline Ti3SiC2 is oxidisable in air in the temperature range from 900 to 1400 C. Similar oxidation could occur on the friction surface of polycrystalline Ti3SiC2. This was verified by studying the frictional oxidation behaviour of a sample that underwent 24000 m sliding distance under 0.2 and 0.8 MPa normal pressures using a block-on-disc type tester incorporating a low carbon steel disc. An observed oxide layer was composed of amorphous titanium oxide, silicon oxide and ferric oxide. The layer seemed to be quite soft in comparison with the counterface of the steel disc. 9 refs. |
