Zusammenfassung:A detailed study has been made on the wear behaviour of untreated and plasma nitrided Ti-5Al-2Nb-1Ta orthopaedic alloy against ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) using pin on disc tribometer under lubricated conditions. The effects of nitriding temperature and nitriding time on the basis of the evolution of the wear volume loss and friction coefficient were investigated. The wear resistance of the plasma nitrided alloys increased considerably when compared to the untreated alloy. The wear debris identified using X-ray diffraction measurements indicated the formation of titanium oxide and titanium oxynitride particles. The wear rate was found to increase with increase in load and sliding velocity.
