Zusammenfassung: | Griep et al discuss the complexity of fruits and vegetables in nutritional epidemiology. Fruits and vegetables are abundant in micronutrients and bioactive phytochemicals and play an important role in the prevention of chronic diseases. The epidemiologic evidence linking fruit and vegetable consumption with lower risks of all-cause mortality, CVD, and cancer is well established, consistent, and underlies dietary recommendations globally, with the universal key message to consume fruits and vegetables daily. Considering that the chemical complexity and large diversity of types of fruits and vegetables may impact associations with health outcomes, it is important to address the role of variety and types of fruits and vegetables on health outcomes to strengthen the evidence underpinning these recommendations. |
