Evidence for internal oxidation during oxygen enhanced crack growth in P/M Ni-based superalloys

A surface chemistry study on P/M alloys confirmed (a) the preferential oxidation of Nb, Ti, Al and Cr on heated, polished surfaces and (b) the penetration of oxygen ahead of the crack tip during crack growth, leading to the oxidation of Nb, Ti, Al and Cr. These results support previous crack growth...

Zusammenfassung:A surface chemistry study on P/M alloys confirmed (a) the preferential oxidation of Nb, Ti, Al and Cr on heated, polished surfaces and (b) the penetration of oxygen ahead of the crack tip during crack growth, leading to the oxidation of Nb, Ti, Al and Cr. These results support previous crack growth enhancement mechanisms for Ni-based superalloys that involve the oxidation of alloy phases ahead of the crack tip.
