Safety and Engineering Ethics on Wheels and Axles for Railway Vehicles, Aluminum Alloy Wheels for Heavy Duty Trucks and Buses and Landing Gears for Aeroplane

A paper as one of papers in the special issue on engineering ethics, deals with products used in transportation. As examples of big accidents related to wheels and axles, ICE884 train accident in 1998 in Germany and Southern Railway154 train accident in 1969 in the USA, were mentioned. It was warned that failure in products manufacturing may even lead withdrawal from business for the manufacturer. High-level safety achievement of Shinkansen (Bullet train in Japan) since 1964 was introduced. In order to response needs, development of new technology is required, which accompany with new risks. Continued technical development and its verification reduce risk and enhance margin in safety. Technical problems and issues related to safety are explained for aluminum alloy wheels of trucks and buses and landing gears of airplanes. The author refers to ethics of an enterprise, which should be grown-up as culture for long years.
