The total number of wide-field plates stored in 230 archives in Europe (including the former Soviet republics) is estimated to about 1,140,000 or 56 percent of all known wide-field plates in the world. The analysis of the European wide-field plate archives shows that they represent a considerable resource for various astronomical investigations. (Author)
