| Zusammenfassung: | In the production of wall and floor tiles in the Italian district of Sassuolo, red clays from the Apennines are used. During single firing, sulphur dioxide is generated by oxidation reactions although emission gases at the plant chimney contain just a trace of sulphur compounds. A study was conducted to discover where the SO2 was being absorbed. It is concluded that the SO2 reacts with the tilemaking raw material during firing as sulphates, absent in the raw material, were found in the fired tiles. 2 refs. |
