Zusammenfassung:The Black Sea, which is the world's largest land-locked inland sea, has suffered environmentally over the past 30 yr. Here, the environmental status of the Black Sea is outlined, citing extensive data on its natural environmental variables, the major shallow-water marine and coastal habitats, the offshore ecosystems, and the causes and extent of land-based pollution. Recommendations for enhancing the sustainable development of the Black Sea are proposed.
