Squeeze cast Al18B4O33 whisker-reinforced magnesium matrix composite

It is shown that the Al18B4O3 whisker is a suitable reinforcement for magnesium alloys and that the Al18B4O33w/Mg composite has competitive properties with the SiCw/Mg composite. Although the Al18B4O33 whisker reacted with the magnesium melt, leading to the formation of MgO, the interfacial reaction was not very serious, a uniform layer being formed. The layer may act as a barrier to prevent further reaction between Al18B4O33 whiskers and Mg. The development of cost effective aluminium borate whisker reinforced magnesium matrix composites may pave the way for the wide application of magnesium matrix composites in general industrial application, especially, where light weight and highly specific properties are demanded. 10 refs.
