Zusammenfassung: | The National Science Foundation (NSF) is supporting research in science and engineering in the US for half a century and will continue through the next century. Microelectronics, information technology (IT) and biotechnology have fostered major developments in the engineering research field. Several IT-related initiatives are initiated by NSF and other US Federal agencies. There are certain challenges facing the mechanics and materials research community and this include modeling short-term micro-scale material behaviour. |
