Zusammenfassung:The discrimination between pores and chipped areas in polished sections of advanced ceramics is disucssed with respect to their morphological characteristics based upon the sintering processes used in their manufacture and their resulting mechanical properties and the flaws which they contain, in particular strain due to internal misfit. The interaction of pores and the formation of chips during the preparation of samples by grinding, lapping and polishing is documented quantitatively using examples of Al sub 2 O sub 3 - and ZrO sub 2 -based ceramics.
