High efficient casting machine for biaxially oriented film manufacturing plant

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Co. has been supplying a manufacturing plant of biaxially oriented plastic films, which have been widely used in various industrial and home uses. In order to respond to needs for raising productivity, authors investigated the improvement in productivity of the plant and achieved commercial production speed of 450 m/min for width of 8.3m. A new type high efficiency cooling rolls with horizontal circular cooling pipes were developed and applied to a casting machine constituting a main part of the plant. Due to high efficiency, a smaller size roll with diameter of 2000mm as compared to conventional one with diameter of 2600mm could be used, consequently effect in saving space and improving operation were seen. Maintenance was also improved because of easy cleaning of cooling pipes.
