Precipitation of the ω phase in 2024 and 2124 aluminium alloys

It is shown that Omega phase can form in 2000 series commercial 2024 and 2124 alloys which were solution treated and directly quenched to various aging temperatures (200, 250, 300 deg C) or air cooled to room temperature. Zusammenfassung:It is shown that Omega phase can form in 2000 series commercial 2024 and 2124 alloys which were solution treated and directly quenched to various aging temperatures (200, 250, 300 deg C) or air cooled to room temperature. The Omega phase nucleated heterogeneously on Mn contaiing dispersoids. Differences in Fe and Si content between 2024 and 2014 do not influence the Omega precipitation. The above study confirms that Ag is not required for precipitation of Omega in Al-Cu-Mg alloys. The results suggest that Omega is a thermodynamically stable phase in the Al-Cu-Mg system in the composition range of 2024 and 2124 alloys but is difficult to nucleate compared to S' which dominates the main structure after commercial heat treatments.
