During the COVID-19 pandemic, local knowledge and community embeddedness ensured food distribution programmes were well targeted and locally relevant in many settings.21 In Nairobi, Kenya, a participatory approach to understanding communities' lived experience of food insecurity revealed the wealth of knowledge in communities and identified simple, innovative, and low-cost food production strategies, such as urban farming, food preservation, and storage strategies to improve food stability and access.22 When communities are part of the conversation and are empowered to make decisions greater clarity emerges about who is affected by trade-offs in food system interventions and how to manage them.23 Cities, provinces, and neighbourhoods show promise as spaces where actions can be co-designed between communities and relevant food system actors.
