DILATOMETERS. AN IMPORTANT TOOL FOR THE CERAMIC INDUSTRY

Dilatometers are described, and their usefulness in measuring thermal expansion is shown. Dilatometers are instruments that measure dimensional changes during heating and cooling. Most are automatic, allowing data to be collected and stored in a computer, which simplifies analysis. Accuracy and repeatability of measurement depends on equipment design and how the software handles calibration or other corrections. Dilatometers are routinely used to monitor the quality of products in line with ISO 9000 and other quality procedures. They provide valuable information when diagnosing process or product problems, and are regularly used in product development.
