Zusammenfassung:Two types of grain boundary carbides that are believed to be responsible for oxygen assisted crack growth in Inconel 718 have been identified: primary NbC and secondary Nb-rich carbides. The secondary Nb-rich carbides serve as a more attractive, additional source of embrittling Nb and ensure its ready diffusion over the grain boundaries. The possible contribution of gamma ' and the applicability of the proposed embrittlement mechanism to other nickel-base alloys are being examined and will be reported.
