Role of structural relaxation in the fracture of vitreous silica

Measured mechanical loss data for vitreous SiO sub 2 were incorporated into an anelastic fracture model to produce qualitative agreement with the measured fracture behavior. A new approach to the design of glass compositions for improved mechanical performance was developed. 27 refs.
