Zusammenfassung:This item has been previously abstracted from original Russian. Aimed to estimate the efficiency of gaseous nitrogen application for titanium annealing the kinetics of chemical reactions in nitrogen atmospheres of various purity has been investigated. It is shown that titanium heating up to 1000 deg C in nitrogen with oxygen content of 0.8% and water vapor content of 0.5% is accompanied by titanium oxidation. The use of high-purity nitrogen (0.001% O sub 2 and 0.002% H sub 2 O) results in titanium oxidation only at the temperature lower 650 deg C. Within the range of 700-750 deg C titanium oxidation preceeds nitride formation, but subsequently, titanium oxides dissolve in a basic metal. At 800 deg C on titanium surface in high-purity nitrogen nothing but titanium nitrides are observed.
