Preparation of gamma -iron ultrafine particles using a transversely excited atmospheric CO sub 2 laser

Ultrafine particles of gamma -Fe which are stable at room temperature have been prepared with a high yield of maximum 90% by the SF sub 6 -sensitized infrared photodecomposition of Fe(CO) sub 5 using a transversely excited atmospheric (TEA) CO sub 2 laser. The obtained gamma -Fe particles are isotro...

Zusammenfassung:Ultrafine particles of gamma -Fe which are stable at room temperature have been prepared with a high yield of maximum 90% by the SF sub 6 -sensitized infrared photodecomposition of Fe(CO) sub 5 using a transversely excited atmospheric (TEA) CO sub 2 laser. The obtained gamma -Fe particles are isotropic in shape, having a uniform size of 6.5-8.5 nm with a mean size of 7.6 nm and fcc structure, and are paramagnetic at 1.8-295K. The paramagnetic fcc gamma -Fe particles begin to transform into ferromagnetic bcc alpha -Fe above 473K with almost complete conversion to alpha -Fe at 653-693K.
