Energy efficiency considerations on monopolar vs bipolar fused salt electrolysis cells

The problem of the voltage efficiency for a set of monopolar cells (due to the voltage losses in bus connections between cells) and the current efficiency for a stack of bipolar electrodes (due to the bypass current) is analyzed. It is shown that both values are of the same order for the cases calcu...

Zusammenfassung:The problem of the voltage efficiency for a set of monopolar cells (due to the voltage losses in bus connections between cells) and the current efficiency for a stack of bipolar electrodes (due to the bypass current) is analyzed. It is shown that both values are of the same order for the cases calculated in this article. These values were calculated for optimum bus cross section for monopolar cells, and the loss in current efficiency due to bypass current was calculated for the case of bipolar electrodes for a given cell stack and free-space geometry designed for the production of aluminum from a molten NaCl-LiCl-AlCl sub 3 electrolyte.
