Zusammenfassung: | Though the optimistic forecasts for growth in metal injection molded (MIM) parts was never realized, new technologies are changing that. These technologies have the potential to reduce costs, improve yield and quality, achieve tolerances, and complex shapes. Tracing the history of MIM shows the evolution of technology that has brought about the present optimistic mood within the industry. A significant improvement is a reduction in shrinkage. This reduces mold costs, allows for smaller green components and solid contents to 70%. These factors, plus improvements in the production facilities to include computer control of all critical operations, are reviewed in light of an increasing demand for MIM. Initial work has been on the production of stainless steel components for the medical, automotive and consumer product industries. A variety of feedstocks and components can also be produced in other materials such as carbon steels, iron nickel steels, tool steels, titanium and tungsten copper. |
