Zusammenfassung:	In December 1992, the tanker Aegean Sea went aground just outside the port of La Coruna (Galicia, NW Spain), releasing some 70,000 t of crude oil. The environmental impact of this disaster, and its economic impact on the Galician shellfish farming industry, have yet to be fully evaluated. Here we report the results of a baseline study of aliphatic hydrocarbon concentrations in mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis from the region (Conselleria de Sanidade, 1989), based on sampling carried out in 1990 and 1991 (before the Aegean Sea disaster).
