Enhancing the corrosion resistance of metals by laser processing

The influence of a laser surface treatment via short ultraviolet pulses on the electrochemical and corrosion characteristics of stainless steel and aluminum alloys was investigated. By choosing the laser parameters appropriately, a significant improvement in the corrosion behavior of the components can be achieved; the laser treatment was successfully applied to protect susceptible surface areas locally (e.g., at welder joints).
